OpenAI is facing a partial outage which has impacted operations of its chatbot, ChatGPT, and agentic coding platform Codex and API platform. Thousands of users are facing issues in accessing the website and app, as per data from Downdetector. 

The company is currently “investigating” the issue behind the outage

The incident has been marked as a “partial outage”, with a wide set of features affected, including conversations, login, voice mode and image generation. This means that even users who are able to sign in may face errors while using specific features.

Reports of the outage began around 7:35 PM IST, when a spike in complaints appeared on Downdetector. In India, users reported issues across ChatGPT, Codex, the mobile app and login access, with disruptions affecting both web and mobile usage. 

Downdetector data shows hundreds of complaints from India, forming a significant share of the total reports during the outage. At its peak, over 800 users reported the outage on Downdetector. 

OpenAI has not disclosed the cause of the current disruption. The company said it has applied mitigation for a separate issue affecting ChatGPT Business users upgrading plans or adding seats, and is monitoring recovery.

The latest disruption comes months after a major outage linked to Cloudflare took down several global platforms, including ChatGPT, X, Spotify and PayPal. That incident triggered widespread errors due to server malfunctions and affected services across sectors, from ride-hailing and cloud platforms to gaming and enterprise tools. 

The issue was later mitigated, though it highlighted the heavy dependence of digital services on a few infrastructure providers.

For OpenAI, this is the second instance of an outage within this year. In March, ChatGPT went down for thousands of users, with issues peaking around 2 AM IST. At the time, OpenAI had cited elevated error rates affecting conversations and related services before restoring operations. It did not disclose the root cause behind the disruption back then.
